STANDING CIVIL AND DIGNIFIED

When EU countries' Ministries of Foreign Affairs gather in Brussels on 11-12 December, the most exciting agenda item will be the "relations with Turkey" as has been the case for the last 6 years. European Union's attitude towards opening ports creates confusion. In case this is not assured, France-Austria-Cyprus and Greece request fines to be imposed on Turkey.

Let us remember the development of events once more. Turkey and T.R.N.C. embraced the international society's suggestion and supported Annan plan. In response to the Greek side's "No" vote, Turkish side voted "Yes" with majority. Under normal circumstances, EU's restrictions on T.R.N.C should have been revoked according to the result of the referendum. However, unfortunately, all the world together with us met the "Western Artifice". The "Oriental Trickery" articulated at all opportunities has become obsolete. We regretfully remember the tension on 17 December after the developments had reached that point. Clever boy insisting on not doing his duty now blames us for not doing our homework. Not only blames but also threatens to cease negotiations.

On the other hand, "Movement of tolerance among religions", which the Pope who came to Turkey to strengthen the dialog with the Orthodox Church himself does not believe, beyond believing, is against it, is used as cover to conceal the actual purpose of the actions.

There is no doubt that EU negotiations have been problematic for many countries. Especially, conservative countries with deep-rooted traditions had more difficulty in this process. Even the UK's joining the union was considerably cumbersome. Initially having an identity of just an economic community, the union adopted new criteria for membership after becoming a political association. "Culture" concept is the primary criterion among these new criteria. This is the reason for European Union's not absorbing Turkey. Economic development is just a tactic aiming at handling the situation. If this had not been the case, then the question "If you were to make new investments, which countries would you choose?" asked in the questionnaire answered by leading investors of the world and declared in the "World Economic Forum" organised in Istanbul on 23-24 November 2006 would not have been responded with the ranking of "India, China, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia". Does Turkey, which has become the favourite country of the world's leading investors, regard the Europe's economic development sufficient? Or, does she want to prepare for the future world as a country spending half of her life with vacation and enclosed to her worn world? Of course not. The Europe cannot digest the cultural and religious difference presently as has been the case for ages.

In geographically and population-wise large countries such as Turkey, it takes time for cultural and economic development to reach a homogenous structure. Besides, one of the purposes of EU membership is to achieve economic and cultural development. It is an impertinent endeavour to request realization of this in the negotiation process.

In the presence of all these, the necessity to face the “” reality I have indicated in my previous article and protect our common sense and civil stance emerges once more. We are inheritors of a culture flawlessly succeeded the togetherness of cultures, religions and races; a culture which the cradle of civilization, Anatolia has inculcated to us. On the other hand, the West has been and still is the leader of all types of discrimination and colonialism for ages. Sultan Abdulhamid banned pretentious celebrations for the conquest of Istanbul to prevent the increase in Turkish-Greek tension which would have led to bad events; to prevent the world from seeing Turkey in that perspective. The reason for Ataturk's converting Hagia Sophia into a museum is completely political and rational. Hence, he not only eliminated the everlasting pressures for converting Hagia Sophia into a church, but also converted Hagia Sophia into a museum to prevent Turkey's involvement in any inter-religions tension with the Hagia Sophia symbol.

In conclusion, the Europe must review its thinking and dialectics. It should not be forgotten that the only way to reinstitute peace and welfare in the world is through realization of ideas purified of prejudices. Turkey's EU membership will be a unique example of realizing such an idea. Otherwise, those claiming to institute peace and welfare in the world on all occasions lose their credibility. Those hiding behind innocent and peaceful ideas and leading the world into violence and terror should immediately realise that they also live in the same world. Despite the problems, Turkey as a bridge, will continue to work for achieving a dialog among civilizations forever. This stance will be passed on to the generations as a civil and dignified stance.
